Water sampling is the process of taking a representative sample of water for analysis or testing. There are a number of reasons why water may be sampled, including:

  • To test the quality of the water
  • To determine the presence of pollutants or contaminants
  • To monitor the progress of water treatment processes
  • To assess the impact of proposed or existing land use activities on water quality

Some common water-borne diseases include cholera, typhoid, and hepatitis A. These diseases are all caused by the ingestion of contaminated water and can be deadly if not treated. Symptoms of water-borne diseases vary depending on the disease but often include nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, and fever.

In Alberta, it is not uncommon for traces of lead to be found in drinking water. Lead can enter the water supply through leaching from old lead pipes, or from contact with lead-based paint. Exposure to high levels of lead can cause a range of health problems, including:

  • Anemia
  • Weakness
  • Kidney damage
  • Brain damage

If you are concerned about the quality of your water, you can have it tested by a certified home inspector. Water sampling is usually a simple and straightforward process, and the results of the analysis can give you peace of mind that your water is safe to drink. Always test your water before buying a new property.
